Primary Tab 
Primary tabs are the records opened from search and list views.

Sub-tab 
Sub-tabs display related records opened from within the open primary tab you are already working from.

Example:
If you have a case open and click on the name of the Opportunity, the Opportunity record will open in a sub-tab.
